Why cured tobacco leaf smells sweet, not smoky
The reference in Tobacco Vanille is a leaf note. Fresh tobacco and cured leaf do not have one unchanging odor. In a study published October 10, 2025, Frontiers in Plant Science researchers compared fresh and cured leaves from four tobacco varieties grown in two Chinese regions in 2021. They found one aroma compound only in fresh leaves, 23 only in cured leaves, and 49 in both (checked September 26, 2026). The cured-only group included β-damascenone and four megastigmatrienones, which the authors discuss in relation to carotenoid breakdown; the paper associates the latter compounds with tobacco-like aromas.
Wikipedia's tobacco-curing entry links the breakdown of leaf pigments to cured tobacco's sweet aroma. Its damascenone entry uses apple, rose, honey, tobacco and sweet as odor descriptors and places damascenones in the rose-ketone family (checked September 26, 2026). Tom Ford's US ingredient list names “Rose Ketones,” but that family label does not identify a particular member or its amount (Tom Ford US site, checked September 26, 2026). It would be a mistake to use a study of tobacco leaves to assert that a particular compound occurs in this finished perfume or in OLFx Tobacco Leaf.

Does Tobacco Vanille smell like cigarettes?
A Reddit r/fragrance thread from August 2022, the top US Google result for this question when checked September 26, 2026, raised the cigarette comparison. We counted words in Fragrantica's displayed reviews instead of treating isolated comments as a verdict.
Of 210 reviews shown on Fragrantica's Tobacco Vanille page on September 26, 2026, 200 written in 2026, 11 mentioned a cigarette or ashtray. Five compared the scent to one, including two comparisons to clove cigarettes. Three said it did not smell like one, and three mentioned cigarettes for other reasons. For scale, 73 of those 210 reviews mentioned tobacco and 73 mentioned vanilla (Fragrantica, checked September 26, 2026). A word count is not a vote, a representative sample or a blind test, but it shows why neither “everyone smells cigarettes” nor “nobody does” follows from the page.

Where the clove and cinnamon come from
Tom Ford's US key-note list stops at ginger and general “spice notes”; it does not name clove or cinnamon there (checked September 26, 2026). Yet the US ingredient list names Eugenia Caryophyllus Oil and Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Bark Oil. Wikipedia identifies the first as clove oil under an older plant name and the second as Ceylon cinnamon bark oil; it also describes eugenol as clove-like and puts it at roughly 80–90% of clove-bud oil (checked September 26, 2026). Tom Ford also lists eugenol and cinnamal, while warning that ingredient lists may change.
In Fragrantica's 210 displayed reviews, clove and cinnamon each appeared in 12 (checked September 26, 2026). Two of the cigarette comparisons invoked clove cigarettes. These are mentions, not proof of what a wearer will smell.
How vanilla, tonka and cocoa change the tobacco
Tom Ford's US page describes the scent with tonka bean, vanilla, cocoa, dry fruit accords and sweet wood sap around the tobacco leaf (checked September 26, 2026). The ingredient list names vanillin and coumarin. Wikipedia describes coumarin as sweet and vanilla-like and says it was isolated from tonka beans in 1820 (checked September 26, 2026). These facts explain the sweet register without treating the ingredient list as the complete composition.
The reviews reflect the tension between sweetness and dry leaf. Of 210 Fragrantica reviews displayed September 26, 2026, 40 used sweet, 14 mentioned honey and five used cloying.
