What does Afgan Ink actually smell like?

Afgan Ink smells dark, bitter and resinous — like a room where something aromatic has been burning and nobody opened a window.

It opens green and sticky at the same time. Black resin lands first, thick and almost tarry, and right behind it comes a stalky, crushed-leaf greenness — the hashish-like darkness the original made famous, herbal and dry rather than sweet. It hits the same place at the back of the nose that pine sap and cut stems hit, and it keeps every gram of sugar in the composition pinned to the floor.

Then the coffee arrives, and this is the part people fix on. Not a milky café drink: the scorched grounds left at the bottom of the pot, the dry bitterness that tightens the back of your jaw and dries the sides of your tongue. Tobacco leans in beside it — cured leaf, not smoke from a cigarette — and the two of them give the middle its bite and its weight. A thread of saffron and dry thyme runs underneath, faintly leathery, faintly medicinal, the herbal edge that keeps the whole thing from reading as dessert.

Underneath, oud and incense carry the load. Oud brings that dense, animal-woody hum you feel in the chest more than in the nose; incense draws a fine line of smoke over the top of it. The drydown is warm earth — damp soil after rain, dry wood, the shut-up air inside a cellar — and it stays close to the skin for the rest of the day.
